Amazon Shares Drop 7% Amid Concerns Over AI Spending and Earnings Miss

Amazon Shares Drop 7% Amid Concerns Over AI Spending and Earnings Miss

Amazon's shares experienced a significant decline of 7% in after-hours trading after the company reported disappointing earnings and raised concerns about its heavy investments in artificial intelligence. This drop followed a third-quarter earnings report that missed Wall Street expectations, leading to a cautious revenue outlook for the crucial holiday shopping season.

During regular trading, Amazon's stock had already fallen by 4.3%, closing at $243.79. Despite the decline in stock price, the company's cloud computing unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS), showed impressive growth, with revenue increasing by 39% year-on-year to $46 billion for the quarter ending September 30. This growth marked the fastest pace in nearly five years and exceeded analysts' expectations.

However, investor concerns were heightened by Amazon's substantial spending on AI infrastructure, with the company forecasting capital expenditures of $220 billion for 2026. CEO Andy Jassy defended these investments, stating that the strategy is effective and that AWS could potentially generate over $1 trillion in annual revenue within the next five to ten years.

Despite the strong performance of AWS, Amazon reported a trailing cash burn of $42.4 billion, driven by high capital expenditures. The company spent $77.26 billion on capital projects during the quarter, significantly exceeding estimates. Analysts noted that while operations generated cash, the capital expenditures were overwhelming.

Amazon Reports Mixed Earnings Amid Rising Revenue Concerns

Amazon's net sales for the quarter reached $201.94 billion, a 12% increase from the previous year. However, net income fell to $20.69 billion, or $1.89 per share, down from $21.19 billion, or $1.95 per share, a year earlier. The company also provided a fourth-quarter sales forecast of $240 billion to $247 billion, which was slightly below analysts' expectations.

Navigating Challenges in AI Spending and Advertising Revenue

In addition to the earnings miss, Amazon's advertising revenue rose by only 12% to $19.6 billion, falling short of the anticipated 18% growth. This marked the first time in seven quarters that the advertising division missed estimates, attributed in part to the timing of the Prime Day shopping event.

As Amazon navigates these challenges, it faces scrutiny over its AI spending and the broader implications for cash flow in the tech industry. Other major tech companies, including Alphabet and Microsoft, have also seen their shares decline amid similar concerns regarding AI investments. Despite these pressures, Amazon continues to expand its retail operations and enhance its technology infrastructure, aiming to strengthen its competitive position in the market.
